This Red copper powder is a very fine - 400 mesh.

Copper powder filler can be mixed with a variety of products including polyester, polyurethane and epoxy resins ONLY.

Weight: 1kg

Please note that the colour of the metal particles may vary between batches and can change over time due to oxidization. If you require a consistent colour, please order a quantity that is large enough to complete your project rather than buying smaller quantities as you need it.

1. Hazard Identification

Copper powder poses specific risks that differ from bulk copper due to its high surface area:

  • Combustibility: Fine copper dust suspended in the air can ignite, posing a severe fire or dust explosion hazard.

  • Health Hazards: It is a respiratory, eye, and skin irritant. Chronic exposure can lead to heavy metal toxicity (copper poisoning) or a condition known as "metal fume fever."

  • Environmental Impact: Highly toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Never handle fine metallic powders without appropriate physical barriers.

  • Respiratory Protection: Use a NIOSH-approved respirator (such as an N95, N100, or half-face respirator with P100 particulate filters) to prevent inhalation of airborne dust.

  • Eye Protection: Wear tight-fitting chemical safety goggles. Do not wear standard safety glasses, as dust can enter from the sides.

  • Hand Protection: Wear disposable nitrile or rubber gloves. Wash hands thoroughly immediately after removing gloves.

  • Body Protection: Wear a designated lab coat or coveralls. Avoid wearing clothes with cuffs where dust can accumulate.

3. Safe Handling Procedures

  • Ventilation: Only work with copper powder in a well-ventilated area, preferably under a certified fume hood or a local exhaust ventilation system.

  • Avoid Dust Generation: Handle the powder gently to prevent it from becoming airborne. Never drop, throw, or aggressively pour the powder.

  • No Ignition Sources: Keep strictly away from open flames, sparks, hot surfaces, and static electricity.

  • Grounding: Ensure all equipment, containers, and transfer systems are properly grounded and bonded to prevent static discharge.

  • Hygiene: Do not eat, drink, or smoke in areas where copper powder is handled or stored.

4. Storage Requirements

  • Environment: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture. Moisture can cause oxidation and degradation of the powder.

  • Containment: Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use.

  • Incompatibilities: Store strictly away from strong oxidizers, strong acids, halogens, and ammonia.

5. Spill Cleanup Procedures

  • Do Not Dry Sweep: Never use a standard broom or compressed air to clean up copper powder, as this creates hazardous dust clouds.

  • Wet Method: Lightly mist the spill area with water (if safe and no electrical hazards are present) to dampen the powder, then wipe it up with damp paper towels.

  • Vacuuming: Use only an explosion-proof HEPA-filtered vacuum designed for combustible metal dusts.

  • Disposal: Place collected waste in a sealed, labeled container for hazardous waste disposal. Do not wash copper powder down the drain.

6. Emergency and First Aid

  • Inhalation: Immediately move the affected person to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen and seek medical attention.

  • Eye Contact: Flush eyes continuously with water for at least 15 minutes, lifting upper and lower eyelids. Seek medical help.

  • Skin Contact: Wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and copious amounts of water. Remove contaminated clothing.

  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do NOT induce vomiting unless instructed by medical personnel. Seek immediate medical attention.

7. Fire Safety

  • Use Class D Extinguishers: In the event of a fire, use ONLY a Class D dry powder fire extinguisher (e.g., sodium chloride base, dry sand, or graphite powder).

  • NEVER Use Water, CO2, or Foam: Applying water or standard fire extinguishers to a metal dust fire can cause a violent reaction, explosion, or spread the fire further.
